Supporting radon legislation through Liz’s law

Ignorance is bliss.

Radon Awareness Acts in the US are putting this old adage out of business. In the case of radon, ignorance can lead to painful death for us or those we love.

Ignorance is grief is more like it.

Illinois and Minnesota are leading the charge. They have both passed Radon Awareness Acts in 2008 and 2015, respectively. These acts put in place procedures for making sure that homeowners are aware of the risks of radon in their homes and encourage testing before real estate transactions. In the case of lives lost to radon-induced cancers, Illinois and Minnesota are saying, “No more.”

An organization called Cancer Survivors Against Radon (CanSAR) is pushing for legislation like this in all states. Called “Liz’s Law” after their founder who lost her battle to cancer in 2013, this law can be implemented in various ways in different states and will act to decrease cancer deaths without lowering housing sales.
